At last, a slightly better sleep – until 4:30am. Part of the problem is that it gets light so early.
Those who struggled through my 2012 blog will know that we did Glacier Bay last time, but we also did Yakutat scenic cruising. On this voyage, Glacier Bay was the only opportunity to actually see a glacier, unless doing a side trip or tour of some sort.
Many were out on deck early, well wrapped up of course, but it wasn’t anywhere near as cold as last time. So mild in fact that there was no need for long trousers – for me. After a hearty breakfast, we joined others out on deck.
There were no regular on board activities anyway, apparently a condition of entering the bay and we had 2 rangers on board. They gave an occasional commentary throughout their time on board, leaving the ship at around 3pm. Although we went up to the wall of the Marjorie Glacier, there was very little calving. In 2012, Yakutat was much more impressive, but for those who hadn’t seen a glacier before, they enjoyed the experience.
At lunchtime, I had a really nice piece of freshly cooked salmon and also a halibut brochette (fish on a skewer!), but passed on the Reindeer chilli this time, as that was out on the terrace. (They’d spelt it Raindeer…)
Afternoon trivia there were just four of us, as Garry and Joanne were probably catching up on sleep.
The dining room dinner menu was Italian. Eggplant parmigiana, followed by veal scaloppini – a very generous portion.
The late show was pianist Antonio Salchi. We enjoyed the show, though some thought the orchestra a bit loud – but at least the drummer was behind the Perspex screen. Paula was OK this time.
